When to use it
I walk to work every day describes a routine. Water freezes at 0°C states a general fact. An action happening right now usually needs the Present Continuous.
Three core patterns
- Affirmative
- I work. / She works. — Я працюю. / Вона працює.
- Negative
- I do not work. / She does not work. — Я не працюю. / Вона не працює.
- Questions
- Do you work? / Does she work? — Ти працюєш? / Вона працює?
With he, she and it, add -s: works. After -ch, -sh, -ss and -x, usually add -es: watches, washes, misses, fixes. Consonant + y becomes -ies: study → studies; vowel + y: play → plays. Have → has, go → goes, do → does. After does / doesn’t, use the base form.
A separate pattern: be
I am. / You are. / She is. → I am not. / You are not. / She is not. → Am I? / Are you? / Is she?
Do not add do / does to be: Is she a teacher?
