Past Simple
Completed past events: describe yesterday, make negatives and ask questions.
When to use it
Use it for completed events in the past: We visited Lviv last year. The past time can be clear from context even without a word such as yesterday.
Affirmative, negative, question
She visited Lviv yesterday. — Вона відвідала Львів учора.
She did not visit Lviv yesterday. / She didn't visit Lviv yesterday. — Вона не відвідала Львів учора.
Did she visit Lviv yesterday? — Вона відвідала Львів учора?
Rules and important exceptions
- Regular verbs: work → worked, live → lived; consonant + y: study → studied. Some short verbs double the final consonant: stop → stopped.
- Learn irregular forms: go → went, take → took. An affirmative Past Simple statement needs the past form: I went. The past participle gone does not fit here.
- After did / did not / didn’t, use the base form: Did she go? She didn’t go. Do not write did went.
- Be has its own pattern: I/he/she/it was; you/we/they were. She wasn’t tired. Were they tired? Do not add did to was/were.
- Subject questions usually do not need did: Who called you?
Common mistakes
❌ Did she went? → ✅ Did she go?
❌ They was tired. → ✅ They were tired.
❌ I gone home yesterday. → ✅ I went home yesterday.
